The Royal Canadian Engineers were key in the expansion of Gibraltar’s tunnel network. Given their expertise in diamond drilling and hard-rock mining, they were called upon to assist in the tunnelling effort.

The Royal Engineers, famously known as ‘Sappers’ share a deep-rooted connection with Gibraltar and were the driving force behind much of the vast labyrinth of tunnels hidden within the Rock, both during WWII and Gibraltar’s earlier history.

Gelignite explosives were planted into holes in the rock and lit to blast away large sections of the rock face
